Euchre - The Free Online Partnership Card Game for Four, with Friends or Bots

Four players sit in two partnerships, with partners across the table. The deck is 24 cards, the 9 up to the ace in each suit, and everyone gets five. One more card is turned face up. Going around from the dealer's left, each player may accept that card's suit as trump or pass. If everyone passes, the card is turned down and players get a second chance to name any other suit. Whoever names trump is the maker, and the makers have to take at least three of the five tricks. On Foony Euchre, the first side to reach the room's target score wins.

The two highest cards are both jacks. The jack of the trump suit is the right bower and beats everything. The other jack of the same color is the left bower and comes second, ahead of the ace of trump. The catch that gets every new player is that the left bower counts as a trump card, not as its printed suit. If hearts are trump, the jack of diamonds is a heart for the rest of the hand, so you have to play it when hearts are led and you cannot play it on a diamond lead unless you hold no hearts.

In the trump suit: right bower, left bower, ace, king, queen, 10, 9. In every other suit it is just ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, except that the suit sharing trump's color is one jack short, because that jack became the left bower. Any trump beats any card of another suit. When no trump lands on a trick, the highest card of the suit that was led takes it.

When you name trump you can choose to play the hand alone. Your partner puts their cards down and sits the hand out, so it is you against two opponents. Take all five tricks and your side scores 4 points instead of 2, which is the fastest way to win a game. Take three or four and you still score the normal 1 point. It is a real gamble, because you are a card short on every trick and the euchre penalty is the same as always.

The side that named trump has to take three of the five tricks. Three or four tricks scores 1 point. All five scores 2, or 4 if the maker played alone. Take fewer than three and you are euchred: the other side scores 2 points instead. That is where the game gets its name, and it is why nobody names trump on a weak hand. It is an optional rule for the second round of bidding. Normally, if all four players pass twice, the cards are thrown in and the next player deals. With stick the dealer on, the dealer is not allowed to pass, so the dealer has to name a suit no matter how bad the hand is.
