Tic Tac Toe 5x5 - Free 5x5 Tic Tac Toe: Four in a Row Wins the Big Board

5x5 Tic Tac Toe

5x5 tic tac toe is tic tac toe on a bigger board: twenty-five squares instead of nine, and four in a row wins instead of three. Turns work exactly as you learned them. One side plays X, the other plays O, X goes first, and lines count across, down, and diagonally. The extra squares give you a game that actually ends with a winner, because the 5x5 board holds far more possible lines than anyone can watch at once.

On Foony the big board is free to play in any browser. Create a room and a friend joins through the invite link, or seat a computer opponent and play solo. Every empty square you hover shows where your symbol would land, and when somebody wins, a line is drawn through the four winning squares.

Four in a Row Wins the Big Board

The win condition is the whole rule change, so it is worth being precise. You need four of your marks in a straight line with no gaps: a gap anywhere means the line does not count. The four cells can sit anywhere, they do not need to touch the edges or pass through the middle. New players tend to watch the center of the board and lose to a diagonal off to one side that they never noticed. Tap through the three line types below.

Three in a row wins nothing here on its own. It is only a threat, and reading which threats are real is most of the skill of the game. If all twenty-five squares fill without anyone completing a line of four, the game ends in a draw, exactly as it would on the classic board.

Big Tic Tac Toe

The classic 3x3 game has a famous problem: it is small enough to play perfectly from memory, and perfect play from both sides always ties. Big tic tac toe fixes that in practice rather than in theory. Mathematicians call boards like this m,n,k-games, and the four-in-a-row game on a 5x5 board is proven to be a draw when both players play perfectly. The difference is that nobody plays it perfectly. There is no trick to memorize, the first move alone has twenty-five options, and every mark changes which of the dozens of remaining lines matter. Between people, the big board feels like a genuinely new game.

If you outgrow it, the same room scales up once more: the Huge 7x7 board needs five in a row across forty-nine squares, where building two threats at the same time becomes the entire game.

How to Win 5x5 Tic Tac Toe

  • Build toward an open three. A row of three with both ends empty wins next turn, because a single reply cannot cover both ends. Nearly every win comes from one.
  • Block one move earlier than feels necessary. Once an open three exists, no single block stops it. The real defense is blocking the open two before it becomes an open three.
  • Fight for the middle nine squares. The center cell is part of eight possible winning lines and a corner only three, so central marks do more than double the work.
  • Lean on the diagonals. People scan rows and columns first. A diagonal pair placed early often goes unnoticed until it is one square from winning.

Foony's harder bots look far enough ahead to catch exactly these mistakes, so a few rounds against the Expert tier teach you which threats are real faster than any guide.

Play Tic Tac Toe 5x5 Online

The game above this article already has the Big 5x5 board selected. Everywhere else on Foony you get here by picking the Big 5x5 card in the Create Room dialog. The default match is two players, X against O, and there is no download and no required account: guests play every board and every bot tier.

The room's bot comes in five strengths, from Easy through Novice, Skilled, and Expert up to Unbeatable, and the host picks one for the whole match. Each move has a 15 second timer by default, which the host can stretch or turn off entirely. If more than two people join, extra players are split onto team X and team O and rotate turns within their team, so a family or a classroom can share one board with nobody sitting out. Wins on the big board feed the same tic tac toe leaderboards and coin rewards as every other board size, and you earn coins for finishing a match even when you lose.

Beyond the 5x5 Board

Back on the base tic tac toe page you will find the classic 3x3 grid and the 7x7 board in the same room, and every size shares your stats, achievements, and bots. If you want a bigger change, Ultimate Tic Tac Toe puts nine 3x3 boards into one match where every move decides which board your opponent plays in next.

Tic Tac Toe Online: Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play tic tac toe?
Two sides take turns marking empty cells on a grid: one side plays X, the other plays O, and X always moves first. The first side to line up enough marks in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) wins. On the classic 3x3 board you need 3 in a row; Foony Tic Tac Toe also offers a 5x5 board that needs 4 in a row, a 7x7 board that needs 5, and Ultimate Tic Tac Toe. Click or tap any legal cell to place your mark.
How does Ultimate Tic Tac Toe work?
Ultimate Tic Tac Toe (sometimes called super tic tac toe) is nine 3x3 boards arranged in a 3x3 macro grid. The cell you pick inside a small board sends your opponent to the matching small board for their next move. Win a small board and you claim that square of the macro grid; claim three macro squares in a row and you win the game. If you are sent to a board that is already decided, you may play in any open board. Foony Tic Tac Toe highlights the board you must play in, so you never lose track.
Can I play tic tac toe online with a friend?
Yes. Open Foony Tic Tac Toe, create a room, and share the invite link: your friend joins from any modern browser and you play head-to-head, X versus O. The default room is a 2 player game with a 15-second turn timer the host can change or disable.
Is Foony Tic Tac Toe free, with no signup?
Yes. Foony Tic Tac Toe is free to play and loads straight into the lobby with no account required. Signing up is optional: it adds cross-device progress, leaderboard ranks, achievements, and shop unlocks, but every variant and every bot tier is available to guests.
Can I play tic tac toe against the computer?
Foony Tic Tac Toe has 5 bot difficulty tiers, picked once per room: Easy and Novice make plenty of mistakes, Skilled punishes blunders, Expert looks ahead, and Unbeatable plays a perfect game on 3x3 (a draw is the best you can do, so bring your A game on the bigger boards instead). Solo games against bots award reduced XP that scales with the bot difficulty you choose.
How many people can play tic tac toe in one Foony room?
The classic format is 2 players, and that is the default room. Foony Tic Tac Toe rooms scale to 1,000 players: extra players are split onto team X and team O, and teammates rotate turns round-robin, so a 3 player or party-sized room still works without anyone sitting out.
What size boards can I play tic tac toe on?
Four variants, chosen by the host in the lobby: classic 3x3 (3 in a row to win), big-board 5x5 (4 in a row), big-board 7x7 (5 in a row), and Ultimate Tic Tac Toe (nine 3x3 boards). The bigger boards fix the classic game's biggest flaw: a 3x3 game between two decent players always ends in a draw, while 5x5 and 7x7 leave real room for strategy.
Does tic tac toe always end in a draw?
Only on the 3x3 board, and only when both players play well: classic tic tac toe is a solved game where perfect play by both sides always produces a tie (a "cat's game"). That is exactly why Foony Tic Tac Toe ships the 5x5, 7x7, and Ultimate variants, where the strategy space is far too large for memorized perfect play. Finishing any game in a draw earns the Cat's Game achievement.
Can I play Foony Tic Tac Toe unblocked at school or work?
Foony Tic Tac Toe runs entirely in the browser over HTTPS from foony.com, with no executable to install and no app store account, so it works on most school and office networks that block game downloads. If your network blocks foony.com itself, ask your IT administrator to allow it.
Does Foony Tic Tac Toe have leaderboards and achievements?
Yes. Wins on Foony Tic Tac Toe feed leaderboards filterable by day, week, month, year, or all-time, and there are four achievements: First Scribble (finish your first game), Cat's Game (end a game in a draw), Ultimate Champion (win a game of Ultimate Tic Tac Toe), and Total Control (win Ultimate without your opponent claiming a single board). Playing also earns Foony coins and account XP that carry across every game on Foony.
Do I need to download anything to play?
No. Foony Tic Tac Toe runs in any modern browser on desktop, tablet, or phone. There is no app to install and nothing to update; open the page and you are one click from a game.
Where is the best place to play tic tac toe online?
If you want more than a bare 3x3 grid, Foony Tic Tac Toe is built for it: four board variants including Ultimate Tic Tac Toe, invite-link rooms for friends, 5 bot tiers for solo practice, snappy mark-drawing animations, and leaderboards. The game known as noughts and crosses in the UK and X and O elsewhere is the same game, and it plays the same here.
