Euchre Online
Euchre is a card game for four people in two teams, played with a short deck of 24 cards. Each person gets five cards, and every round everyone puts down one card. The highest card takes those four. Win three of the five rounds and your team scores.
You can play it here in your browser, free, with no download and no account. Sit down against three bots to learn it, or send a link to three friends and play together.
How to Play Euchre
You sit across from your partner, so the two people beside you are your opponents. Somebody deals five cards each and turns one card face up in the middle.
That face-up card is an offer. Going clockwise, each person can accept its suit as the strongest suit for this round, or pass. Accepting is called ordering it up, and the dealer picks the card up and throws one away. If all four pass, the card is turned face down and everyone gets a second chance to name any other suit instead.
Whoever names the suit takes on a promise: their team has to win three of the five rounds. Manage it and they score. Fall short and the other team scores instead, which is where the game gets its name.
Euchre Rules
One suit is chosen every round and beats all the others. Any card of that suit beats any card of another suit, however high. When nobody plays that suit, the highest card of whatever was led first wins.
You have to follow the suit that was led if you can. Only when you have none of it may you play anything else.
Then there is the rule that catches everybody. The two jacks of the same colour as the chosen suit are the two best cards in the game, and the second of them changes suit for the round. Pick a suit below and watch where the jacks land.
So if hearts are chosen, the jack of diamonds stops being a diamond. It is a heart until the round ends: you must play it when hearts are led, and you cannot play it when diamonds are led unless you have no hearts at all. That is why the chosen suit has seven cards and its matching colour has only five.
Card players call these two jacks the bowers. The one that matches the chosen suit is the right bower and beats everything. The other is the left bower and comes second, ahead of the ace.
Euchre Scoring
Only the team that chose the suit can be euchred, and only they can score the big hands. Everything else is worth one point.
Games run to 10 points by default. You can set 5 for a quick game or 15 for a long one when you make a room.
Going Alone
When you name the suit, you can choose to play the round without your partner. They put their cards down and sit it out, so it is you against two people with one card fewer on every round.
Win all five and your team scores 4 points instead of 2, which is the fastest way to win a game. Win three or four and you still get the normal 1 point. Fall short and you are euchred as usual, so the downside is no worse. It is a real gamble, and it is the most exciting thing in euchre.
Play Euchre Online with Friends or Against Bots
Make a room and share the link. Your friends join from any browser, on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install. If you are short of players, fill the empty seats with bots at one of four difficulty levels.
Rooms hold more than four people. Extra players queue behind a seat and take turns playing cards from that hand, so a whole group can sit in on one game.
You can also turn on stick the dealer, a common house rule. Normally, if all four players pass twice, the hand is thrown in and somebody else deals. With stick the dealer on, the dealer is not allowed to pass on the second time round, so every hand gets played and the dealer has a much harder decision.
Euchre vs Spades
Both are team games about winning rounds, but they are different sizes. Spades uses all 52 cards, deals 13 each, keeps spades as the strongest suit every time, and asks each player to promise an exact number of rounds. Euchre uses 24 cards, deals five each, picks a new strongest suit every time, and asks one team to promise three out of five.
Euchre hands are much shorter, so a game moves fast. If you like spades or hearts, euchre sits comfortably beside them.
Where Euchre Comes From
Euchre arrived in North America with German-speaking settlers in the 1800s and took hold in the Midwest and Ontario, where it is still a kitchen-table fixture. It is also the reason the joker exists: the card was invented in the 1860s as a top trump for euchre. The Pagat rules archive has the historical detail and the regional variations.
