Mahjong Connect Online
Mahjong Connect is a free tile linking puzzle played on a single flat layer. You clear the board by picking two tiles with the same face, and the pair is only removable if a line could be drawn between them using at most three straight strokes, without crossing any other tile. It uses the same tiles as mahjong solitaire, but the board is flat and the puzzle is finding a clear path between pairs instead of digging through a stack. Many players find it faster and snappier for exactly that reason. On Foony every Connect deal can be fully cleared, and the board is shared live, so friends can race you for pairs or clear it with you.
How the Connecting Line Works
The whole game comes down to one rule. A legal connection is a chain of one, two, or three straight strokes, each running horizontally or vertically through empty cells. Three strokes means the line bends twice, which is why the rule is often described as two turns maximum. The line is even allowed to leave the board and travel around the edge. Click through the five cases below, each one checked against the actual game engine.
Most tiles need an exact twin. The four flowers count as one group and the four seasons as another, and since Foony draws each group with one shared face, a legal pair always looks identical anyway.
Mahjong Connect vs Classic Mahjong Solitaire
Classic mahjong solitaire piles tiles into hills up to five layers deep, and a tile is playable when nothing covers it and one of its sides is open. Connect flattens everything to one layer, so no tile is ever buried. What limits you instead is space. A pair in the crowded middle of the board may be unreachable simply because no line can fit between the tiles around it.
That changes how the two games feel. In the classic game the problem is what you cannot see, because tiles stay hidden until you dig them out. In Connect everything is visible from the start, the problem is distance instead, and every pair you remove opens cells that future lines can travel through. Foony has five boards built for Connect play, and the mini maps below show each one from above. The Connect preset deals the solid 14 by 8 Full Grid, and setting the board to Random rotates through all five.

Rooms opened from this page use the Connect preset automatically. Anywhere else on the site, open the mahjong room settings and choose the Connect card on the Presets tab, then use the Advanced tab if you want a different flat board, a co-op room, or a clock of 3 to 30 minutes. Rooms are free, run in any modern browser, and hold anywhere from one player to a thousand on one live board that people can join mid game.
With friends in the room, the default mode is a race. A pair scores 10 points for whoever links it first, and a follow-up match within 4 seconds earns a 5 point streak bonus. The Co-op checkbox removes the scoring, and everyone clears the same board together. If you get stuck, the Hint button highlights one connectable pair and can be used again after 10 seconds, and when no legal link remains anywhere, a shuffle rearranges the leftover tiles so the board can still be cleared. Clearing a Connect board without ever shuffling earns the Well Connected achievement, a nice first target.
Mahjong Connect Strategy
- Start at the edges. On a fresh Full Grid there are only two kinds of legal matches: tiles sitting directly next to each other, and pairs along the same outside edge, whose line can run around the open border. The outer ring is where every game begins.
- Open lanes toward the center. An empty row or column connects every tile that faces it. Clearing pairs that extend an open lane unlocks far more than clearing pairs at random.
- A possible link stays possible. Lines travel through empty cells, and cells only ever empty out, so a pair you can connect now will still connect later. Unlike the classic game, waiting costs you nothing, so you can pick the most useful match instead of the most urgent one.
- Watch which copies you leave behind. When three or four copies of a face are visible, the two you link decide which copies remain. Pick the pair that leaves the remaining copies closest to open space.
- Match neighbors in a race. Side-by-side pairs take no planning to link, so they are the easiest way to keep the 4 second streak going while opponents study the board.
Shisen-Sho and the History of Mahjong Connect
The connect rule is older than the web games that made it famous. It comes from Shisen-Sho, a Japanese tile game named after Sichuan Province and sometimes called Four Rivers, which uses mahjong tiles and allows a pair to be removed when an unobstructed path of straight segments with no more than two turns joins them. Arcade versions were already appearing in 1989, decades before browser games renamed the idea Mahjong Connect. The version you are playing here keeps that original rule exactly and adds the parts a 1989 arcade machine could not offer, like a shared board, guaranteed clearable deals, and a co-op mode.
