Word Guessing Game Online
Foonle is a free word guessing game where a whole room races the same hidden 5-letter word at once. You get six guesses, every letter comes back colored to tell you how close you were, and the round ends the moment everybody has finished or the clock runs out. Rounds stack up into a match, scores add up across all of them, and the fastest solver takes the game.
The colors are the whole game. Green means that letter is in the word and you put it in the right place. Yellow means the letter is in there somewhere, just not where you tried it. Grey means it is not in the word at all. Six guesses is enough to work almost any word out, as long as you spend the early ones learning rather than hoping.
Play Wordle-Style Rounds With Friends
Open a private room, share the invite link, and everyone who clicks it lands in the same match. A room seats 8 comfortably, which is where the scoreboard still reads at a glance, and it can hold up to 1,000 if you want an audience. You need a free account to host a room. Anyone joining a public one can play as a guest.
While a round runs, the side panel shows every opponent's grid as colors only, never their letters. You can see somebody is on their fourth row with three greens, which is enough to know they are about to take the round off you, without being handed the answer. Solving early does not end the round for everyone else. It banks your points and leaves the others to finish.
Playing on your own works the same way. The clock still runs, the rounds still count, and your score still lands on the leaderboard, so a solo room doubles as practice.
Room Settings
The host picks how long a match runs and how much time each round gets. Rounds go from 1 to 20, with 10 as the default. The clock goes from 30 to 300 seconds, with 90 as the default. There are two presets for skipping the settings entirely:
Five rounds, 45 seconds each. Long enough to be a real match, short enough to fit between two other things.
Twenty rounds at a minute each. One bad round stops mattering, and the win goes to whoever is steady.
Hosts can also cap the room size, set a minimum account level, and block guest accounts.
How to Play Foonle
Type any real 5-letter word and press Enter. About 17,600 words are accepted as guesses, so most things you can think of will go through, and anything that does not is genuinely not in the dictionary. The word you are hunting comes from a much smaller list of roughly 1,650 everyday words, filtered by part of speech so names, places, and brands never come up. You will not lose a round to somebody's surname.
Repeated letters are where people get caught out, because the coloring is stricter than it looks. Each letter in the answer can back exactly one colored tile. Greens claim theirs first, and only then do the leftovers get handed out as yellows.
If you get stuck, the hint button costs 50 coins and reveals the letter sitting in one position you have not turned green yet. You need two guesses in before you can buy one, and you get one per round, so it breaks a deadlock rather than playing the round for you.
Foonle Scoring
Two things set a round's score: how few guesses you needed, and how much clock was left when you got there. Each unused guess is worth about a sixth of the total, and the clock scales the rest, with a floor so that a slow solve is still worth something. First guess on a full clock is the maximum, 1,000 points.
The floor matters more than it looks. Sixth guess as the buzzer goes is still 67 points, so there is never a reason to give up on a round. It also means a player who guesses carefully and lands on guess three beats a player who fires blindly and stumbles in on guess five, even if the second one was faster.
Strategy for a 5-Letter Word Game
- Spend your first guess on coverage, not on a hunch. A word like SLATE or CRANE tests five common letters at once. Two yellows from an opening guess narrows the field far more than one lucky green.
- Do not reuse a grey letter. It is the most common wasted guess. Six rows is not many, and the keyboard under the grid is already tracking every letter you have ruled out, so read it before you type.
- Chase the vowels early. Almost every answer has one or two, and finding out which ones cuts the candidate list faster than any consonant does.
- Watch the clock, not just the grid. Points fall as time runs down. If you have three greens and no idea what fits, typing anything plausible beats sitting on a perfect deduction while the score drains.
- Read the room before you rush. If two opponents already have four rows filled, the round is about to end whether or not you are ready. If nobody has moved, you have time to think.
Leaderboards, Achievements, and Progression
Every finished game pays coins and experience. Half of what a round is worth is for playing it out, and half is for how close you got, so a round nobody solved still pays you for the greens and yellows you dug up. Guessing nothing at all pays nothing.

Foonle vs Wordle
Wordle, now run by The New York Times, gives everybody one word a day and asks you to solve it alone. That is the appeal: it is small, it is finished in three minutes, and everyone you know had the same puzzle.
Foonle takes the coloring and points it at a room. There is no daily word to wait for and no streak to protect.
